The current moon landing aims to bring our lifestyle and economy within the confines of our single planet. In our view, this means we must live more consciously and not pursue the eternal growth we're being taught. If everyone lived like a Dutch person, we would need 2.9 Earths to meet our needs.
The hairs on the back of our necks stand on end when we think of a phenomenon like "Black Friday." A US-born "custom" used to entice consumers to buy a lot of stuff with huge discounts.
But we have more stuff than ever before. So much stuff that we can no longer find a place for it in our own homes. We even rent storage space to house our clutter. If we're to believe the self-storage industry, 1.2 million Dutch people are chronically [!) short of space.
No, if there's one thing we don't need, it's more stuff. Consume less and keep your lifestyle within the limits of this one planet. Ensure that the natural resources of our planet are distributed as equally as possible among all the people and animals that inhabit it.
An event like Black Friday doesn't fit in with that. In fact, it's a symptom of what's wrong with our current economy. We've been thinking about a valid counterargument. Several options have been considered. For example, we considered doubling our prices on Black Friday, which would help us further spread the idea of a more circular society.
We've finally decided to take a break. That's why we're going dark on Black Friday. Our online store will be unavailable that day.
