Sustainability
One of the most frequently used bingo words in the circular entrepreneurship category in recent years. It's used all the time. I recently saw it on a jar of sambal: "Now with sustainable ingredients."
That doesn't have to be a problem, as long as you clearly explain what makes your company, product, or process sustainable. Anyone can tell stories. It's up to you to prove that your story isn't just a myth.
Unfortunately, we regularly see examples of companies portraying a process as transparent and sustainable, but failing to account for their claims. Therefore, transparency is a key factor for us in using the sustainability label.
Impact report
That's why we're presenting our impact report again this year. In this report, we're linking it to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Internationally known as the SDGs, they allow companies and governments to demonstrate the global goals they're working towards.
Just as GAAP is a standard in international accounting, the SDGs are an international standard or language for CSR or should we say AVO [Earth Responsible Business Conduct].
What immediately stands out is that while we saved coffee grounds from the waste incinerator last year, we didn't produce any mushrooms. This is, of course, because we don't have an active nursery due to the fire. The bitterballen (bitterballs) are made with emergency mushrooms .
Average distance
We believe that decentralized waste processing and food production play a vital role in achieving a more sustainable society. No more lugging food halfway around the world. That's why we only process coffee grounds from the immediate vicinity of Rotterdam into mushrooms.
This year, we're starting to grow mushrooms on coffee grounds again at our new nursery. All our customers are located within or near the city limits. The average distance from our nursery to our customers is less than 10 kilometers.
These kilometers are also covered 100% electrically. No national grower can match that.
Compensation
We offset a total of 8 tons of CO2. We did this through Carbon Alt Delete . They purchase Voluntary Emission Reductions (VERs), verified and approved by Gold Standard, and then destroy them.
In doing so we reduce the market for these VERs.
You can find the certificate here . Because we don't yet have a clear picture of our electricity consumption, we can't yet claim to be CO2 neutral or negative. However, that is our ambition for this year. From now on, we will publish our impact report quarterly. We'll keep you updated.
You can find out here which certificates we have destroyed.
